Why Was Julie Written?
Jean Craighead George, the author, had a special reason for writing Julie. Her son, Craig, moved to Barrow, Alaska. Jean visited him and his family almost every year. She learned a lot about the people and the land. Craig and his Eskimo friends taught her many things. Eventually, she felt she had to write a follow-up to Julie of the Wolves.
What Happens in Julie?
The story of Julie starts right after the first book ends. Julie had been living in the wild for many months. She survived by using her culture's old traditions. A pack of wolves even accepted her as one of their own. Now, she decides to go back to human society. She wants to return to her father's home.
Julie's Return Home
Julie is not ready for all the changes she finds. Her father has stopped many of the old ways. He is even willing to shoot wolves. He does this to protect the village's muskox herd. This change is very upsetting for Julie.
Meeting Amy, the Wolf Pup
Julie returns to the wolf pack. There, she sees a new wolf cub. She names the cub Amy. Amy is named after Julie's pen pal from San Francisco.
Balancing Old and New Ways
Throughout the story, Julie learns to deal with the new ways. She tries to make them fit with the old traditions. At the same time, she fights to protect her beloved wolf pack. It's a journey of understanding and protecting what she cares about most.
