Julie's Musical Journey
Julie Christmas spent most of the 2000s as the main singer for two bands. One was the noise rock band Made Out of Babies. The other was a short-lived post-metal supergroup called Battle of Mice. A supergroup is a band made up of members from other famous bands. Battle of Mice included musicians from bands like The Book of Knots, Neurosis, and Red Sparowes.
Early Band Work
With Made Out of Babies, Julie sang on three studio albums. These were Trophy (released in 2005), Coward (2006), and The Ruiner (2008). The band stopped making music for a few years and officially broke up in 2012.
Battle of Mice released one studio album with Julie, called A Day of Nights (2006). They also released a few shorter music collections called EPs. This band stopped playing together in 2009.
Solo Music and Collaborations
In 2008, Julie Christmas lent her voice to a song called "Generation of Ghosts." This song was on the album Quietly by the band Mouth of the Architect.
Julie is also part of an experimental music project called Spylacopa. This project is led by John LaMacchia, a guitarist from the band Candiria. Other musicians involved include Greg Puciato from The Dillinger Escape Plan and Jeff Caxide from Isis. Spylacopa released an EP in 2008 and a studio album in 2015.
Her first solo album, The Bad Wife, came out in late 2010. The first song from the album, "July 31," was even used in the movie Wrong Turn at Tahoe. Julie explained that her solo music allowed her to explore different feelings. She said that while her main bands were "rough, angry, and involved a lot of screaming," her solo work showed other emotions like love. Critics really liked The Bad Wife when it was released.
In 2012, Julie appeared on the album From Beyond Love by Strings of Consciousness. In 2015, she was a guest on the album Wronger by the band Pigs.
Recent Performances
Julie Christmas was a special guest on the entire seventh album by the Swedish post-metal band Cult of Luna. This album, Mariner, was released on April 8, 2016. Mariner is a concept album, which means all the songs tell a story or explore a specific idea. This album focused on themes of exploring outer space.
Julie performed her first live show in six years on March 6, 2023. This concert took place at the Saint Vitus Bar in New York City. Johannes Persson, the guitarist from Cult of Luna, was part of her backing band. Julie also performed at the Dutch metal Roadburn Festival in April 2023. She had originally been scheduled to play there in 2020, but that event was canceled.
