Good Thing You're Not an Octopus!

Good Thing You're Not an Octopus! was Julie Markes' first book. It was published by HarperCollins in 2001. Maggie Smith created the artwork for this book.

This story is for younger children, usually ages three to six. It helps a boy do his daily chores by making him imagine how hard they would be if he were an animal. For example, if he doesn't want to get dressed, his helper reminds him to be glad he's not an octopus. An octopus would need to put eight legs into pants instead of just two!

Publishers Weekly magazine said the book was a "clever way" to help a child who doesn't want to cooperate. School Library Journal called it a "delightful romp." They also said that young kids would find the idea of animals in the boy's situation very funny.

I Can't Talk Yet, But When I Do...

Julie Markes' book, I Can't Talk Yet, But When I Do..., came out in 2003. It was published by HarperFestival and has drawings by Laura Rader.

The story is about a baby mouse who wants to thank his older sister for being patient with him. The book uses rhyming words to show what the baby would say if he could talk. Publishers Weekly noted that the book quietly shows how important and capable older brothers and sisters are. They called it a "smart and sympathetic" story that encourages new older siblings.

Where's the Poop?

In 2004, HarperCollins published Where's the Poop?. This book helps children with toilet training and has illustrations by Susan Kathleen Hartung.

In the book, animal parents ask their young ones if they have "made a poop." Readers can then lift flaps to see pictures of what each animal leaves behind. Kim Boatman of the San Jose Mercury News said the book was "a necessity" for parents who were struggling with potty training. Even actress Courteney Cox mentioned it as one of her children's favorite books in People magazine.

Shhhhh! Everybody's Sleeping

Shhhhh! Everybody's Sleeping is a bedtime story published by HarperCollins in 2004. It talks about the fictional bedtimes for people in different jobs, like a farmer or a baker.

School Library Journal chose this book as one of its Best Books of 2005. It was also named one of Scholastic's "Best Before-Bed Read-Alouds," meaning it's a great book to read aloud before going to sleep.
