Julio Peris Brell (born January 29, 1866 – died December 9, 1944) was a talented painter from Valencia, Spain. He was known for his amazing ability to capture and show different kinds of light in his artwork. He especially loved painting landscapes, portraits, and still lifes (pictures of objects like fruit or flowers).

Life of a Painter

Julio Peris Brell was born in Valencia, Spain. He came from a family that believed in liberal ideas.

He started studying fine arts in 1876. By 1882, he became a secretary for the painters' group at the Scientific, Literary and Artistic Athenian of Valencia. He finished his art studies in 1884. In 1886, he became a full member of the Athenian. Famous painters like Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench supported him.

In 1890, he showed his painting 'The faith of the baptism' in a big art show in Madrid. There, he met the brothers Ricardo and Pío Baroja, and they became good friends.

In 1894, a new art group called the Circle of Beautiful Arts of Valencia was created. Peris Brell joined in. He took part in the first art shows with his friend, the painter Joaquín Agrasot.

Many of Peris Brell's paintings from the late 1800s were sold in Catalonia. In 1897, his painting 'La Fuente' was shown in an art exhibition in Mexico. The National School of Beautiful Arts in Mexico bought it. He also showed his art in Cadiz and Murcia.

In 1900, he was chosen to be the president of the painters' section of the Circle of Fine Arts in Valencia. That same year, he helped decorate a fancy house called 'palacete de Don Jose Ayora'. He painted a piece called 'Brindis'. A year later, he showed his painting 'My mother' at a national exhibition.

In 1901, he married Inocencia Blanca Gimeno. She was a widow with three children. Two years later, his first daughter, Julia, was born. In 1909, his twin daughters, Mª Ana and Vicenta, were born. That same year, he became a librarian at the Modern School.

In 1911, he started drawing for a magazine called 'Letras y Figuras'. In 1912, he joined the new Circle of Fine Arts. He also took part in a special event to honor his friend Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench. In 1913, he became president of the celebrations section of the Circle of Fine Arts. A year later, he became president of the Painting section.

Sadly, his friend Jose Benlliure Ortiz passed away in 1916. In 1919, his good friend Joaquín Agrasot also died.

Peris Brell was known for his pintura costumbrista style. This means he painted scenes from everyday life. He often added beautiful landscapes to his paintings. This made his art special and gave viewers a unique feeling.

In 1923, he showed 31 of his paintings in an exhibition in Madrid. A whole room was dedicated to his work. On August 10, his friend and teacher Joaquín Sorolla passed away.

In 1924, he showed his paintings 'A plena luz' and ‘Barraca valenciana' at a national art exhibition. He also took part in an exhibition in Buenos Aires in 1925.

From 1926, he regularly showed his art at the Imperium Gallery. On December 6, his friends held a special event to honor him.

In 1928, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos chose him as an academic member. He had great success in exhibitions. This included a show in Barcelona in 1931 called 'Catalan Painting of Great Teachers of the 19th Century'. That same year, he was chosen to be a judge for a painting scholarship in Valencia.

In 1933, he took part in several art shows in Valencia. These included the 'Exhibition of Reunited Valencian Artists' and the traditional July's Fair exhibition.

He also participated in the Regional Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1934. That year, he was again chosen to be a judge for a painting scholarship.

In 1935, he had great success at the Third Regional Exhibition of Fine Arts. The public and critics loved his work. He even won a medal from the newspaper 'La Voz Valenciana' based on popular votes.

In 1936, he showed his art in an exhibition called 'Pro Milicies'. This show was organized to support a good cause.

In 1943, the Prat gallery held a special exhibition of his works to honor him. In 1944, he took part in an exhibition of flowers and still life paintings. He also joined a group exhibition at the Mateu's Gallery. He passed away on December 19, 1944, at his home in Valencia.
