June Marie Dally-Watkins (born Skewes; 13 June 1927 – 22 February 2020) was a famous Australian businesswoman and fashion model. She was known for being a successful entrepreneur.

In 1950, she opened a special school in Sydney. This school taught young women about etiquette (good manners) and deportment (how to carry yourself well). A year later, she started Australia's very first model agency and modelling school. She also created a Business Finishing College. June Dally-Watkins often spoke in the media about good manners and clear speaking.

In 1993, she received an Order of Australia Medal. This award was given for her important work in business. She even appeared on the TV show Bogan Hunters in 2014. There, she taught etiquette to the show's winners. In 2019, she was still teaching manners to women in China.

Early Life and Family

June Dally-Watkins was born in Sydney in June 1927. Her birth name was June Skewes. Her mother, Caroline May Skewes, came from a farming family. They lived in a village called Watsons Creek, New South Wales.

June's father was a businessman named Bob Monkton. He met her mother while hunting rabbits. June did not meet her father until she was older. In 1940, her mother married David Dally-Watkins. He was a former army captain. He adopted June, and she took his last name. This is how she became June Dally-Watkins.

The family moved to Sydney in 1940. June went to Willoughby Girls High School there. However, her mother's marriage to David did not last long. In 1942, June and her mother moved back to Tamworth. This was because people were worried about a possible Japanese invasion of Australia.

Career as a Model and Teacher

In 1944, a photographer in Tamworth named Jan Solomons took pictures of June. He told her mother that June's looks could lead to a modelling career. Following this advice, June and her mother moved back to Sydney.

June started working as a model at Farmers & Co Department Store. This store was later bought by Myer. June once said that in the 1940s, she looked like a "milkmaid." But she became very successful. In 1949, she won the Australian Model of the Year award.

In 1950, June visited New York City. She wanted to learn about the newest fashion trends. After her trip, she opened her own school. It taught good manners and how to carry yourself. She then started her own modelling agency. She also created a business college.

Later in her life, June Dally-Watkins taught etiquette in China. She started a program called Look of Success. She worked with a Chinese partner. This program held courses in fancy hotels.

Personal Life

June Dally-Watkins had a short relationship with the American actor Gregory Peck. In 1953, she married John Clifford. He was a naval officer. They had four children together, two sons and two daughters. They separated in 1968 and divorced in 1969.

June Dally-Watkins passed away on 22 February 2020. She was 92 years old.
