June Island is a small piece of land located in a very cold place called Antarctica. It is part of a group of islands known as the Debenham Islands. You can find it just southwest of another island called Audrey Island, off the western coast of Graham Land.
Discovering June Island
June Island was found and mapped by a group of explorers called the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). This expedition took place between 1934 and 1937. The leader of this important journey was John Rymill.
How June Island Got Its Name
John Rymill, the leader of the expedition, decided to name the island. He named it after a daughter of Frank Debenham. Frank Debenham was an important person who helped advise the British Graham Land Expedition.
