History of Junius Heights
Junius Heights was built a long time ago. Construction started in the late 1910s and continued into the 1930s. Back then, it was on the eastern edge of the city of Dallas. Most houses are in the Craftsman and Prairie styles. These are cool, classic architectural styles.
A streetcar line used to run through the neighborhood. This made it easy for people to get around. But the streetcars stopped running in Dallas later on.
In the early 1970s, Abrams Road was extended. This road cut the neighborhood into two parts. The special Junius Heights columns were also moved at this time. People in the neighborhood worked hard to save them from being torn down.
In 2006, Junius Heights officially became a historic district. This means its unique old buildings are protected. In 2010, the neighborhood was named "Best Place for Families" by This Old House magazine.
What Makes Up Junius Heights?
Most of the homes in Junius Heights are single-family houses. They were built between 1906 and 1940. Some newer houses have also been built in recent years.
In 2011, a writer for D Magazine said that East Dallas feels like "a city within a city." She noted that this feeling is even stronger in Junius Heights. This is because it is very close to many restaurants and shops.
