Early Life and First Bands
Justin Chancellor grew up in England and has both English and Norwegian family roots. He went to Tonbridge School in Kent. While there, he played bass in a school band called Slice of Life. The band even recorded a tape with their own songs.
After his school days, Justin joined the band Peach. They released one album and two EPs. In 1994, Peach got a big opportunity to open for Tool during their European tour. This is how Justin first connected with the members of Tool.
Joining the Band Tool
In 1995, Tool's original bass player, Paul D'Amour, left the band. The band needed a new bassist and remembered Justin from their tour with Peach. They invited him to join.
Justin moved to the United States to become a full-time member of Tool. His first album with the band was Ænima, which was released in 1996. Since then, he has played on all of Tool's albums, helping to create their unique and complex sound.
Musical Equipment
Justin Chancellor is known for his special bass sound, which he creates using specific instruments and gear.
What Bass Guitars Does He Play?
- Wal Bass: This is his main bass. A friend recommended it to him while he was recording the album Ænima. He liked it so much that he now owns four of them.
- Music Man Stingray: He uses this bass for several songs, including "Forty-Six & 2" and "H.".
- Gibson Thunderbird: He used this bass for the song "Prison ..." when he first started playing live with Tool.
- Warwick Streamer: In 2017, he got his own custom-made Warwick bass.
Amplifiers and Effects
To get his signature sound, Justin uses a mix of amplifiers and effects pedals.
Amplifiers
- He uses three Gallien-Krueger 2001RB amplifier heads. One is for a "dirty" or distorted sound, one is for a "clean" sound, and one is a backup.
- He plays through Mesa Boogie speaker cabinets.
Effects Pedals
Justin uses many pedals to change his bass sound. One of the most famous is the DigiTech Bass Whammy. This pedal can change the pitch of the notes he plays. He uses it on famous Tool songs like "Schism" and "Vicarious". Some of his other pedals include:
- A Guyatone VTX Tremolo for a vibrating sound.
- A Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 for distortion.
- A Boss DD-3 Digital Delay to create echoes.
- A Dunlop Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah, which is a special pedal designed just for him.
