Early Life and Music Beginnings
Justin Chancellor was born in England. His family has roots in both England and Norway. He went to Tonbridge School in Kent, England. There, he played bass in a school band called Slice of Life. They even performed songs like "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart.
The band released a tape with their own songs. After school, Chancellor studied at Durham University. Later, he joined the band Peach.
Joining the Band Tool
Peach released an album called Giving Birth to a Stone. They also released two shorter music collections called EPs. Peach opened for Tool during concerts in Europe in 1994. The band Peach broke up in 1995.
In September 1995, Justin Chancellor moved to the United States. He joined Tool as their new bass player. He replaced Paul D'Amour, who had left the band. Justin has been a full member of Tool since their 1996 album, Ænima.
Justin's Music Gear
Justin Chancellor uses special equipment to create his unique bass sound.
Basses He Plays
- Wal Bass: Justin's main bass guitar is a Wal MKII 4-string. He bought it while recording Tool's album Ænima. This bass helps create his powerful sound. He owns three other Wal basses as well. Justin usually uses Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings.
- Music Man Stingray: He used this bass on several Tool songs. These include "Forty-Six & 2" and "H.".
- Gibson Thunderbird: He played this bass live once in 1995 or 1996. This was when he first joined Tool.
- Warwick Streamer: Since 2017, Justin has a custom Warwick Streamer Stage II bass.
Amplifiers He Uses
Amplifiers make the bass sound loud. Justin uses several amps for different sounds.
- Gallien-Krueger 2001RB heads (three of them: one for a "dirty" sound, one for a "clean" sound, and one as a backup).
- Mesa Boogie Roadready 4x12 (for the "dirty" sound).
- Mesa Boogie Roadready 8x10 (for the "clean" sound).
- Demeter Amplification VTBP-201S Bass Preamp (sends his sound directly to the main speakers).
Effects Pedals
Effects pedals change the sound of the bass. Justin uses many different pedals.
- Boss TU-2 (tuner)
- Guyatone VTX Tremolo (creates a shaky sound)
- DigiTech Bass Whammy (changes the pitch of the notes). He uses this on many songs like "Schism" and "Lateralus."
- Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Distortion (makes the sound gritty)
- Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble (makes the sound thicker)
- Boss BF-2 Flanger (creates a swirling sound)
- Boss DD-3 Digital Delay (repeats notes)
- MXR Bass Envelope Filter (changes the tone based on how hard he plays)
- Prescription Electronics Rx Overdriver (adds more drive to the sound)
