Justin Morgan Had a Horse is a popular children's historical novel written by Marguerite Henry. It was illustrated by Wesley Dennis and first published in 1945. The story is about real people and animals from the late 1700s in Vermont, USA. It tells the tale of Justin Morgan and his special bay stallion named Figure. This book was so good that it was a runner-up for the famous Newbery Medal in 1946.
In 1954, a new version of the book was released by Rand McNally. Both Marguerite Henry and Wesley Dennis updated their copyrights for this edition.
The Story of Justin Morgan Had a Horse
The book's main character is a schoolteacher named Justin Morgan. One day, he takes two young horses, called colts, as payment for an old debt. One of these colts grows up to be a very strong, even though small, riding horse. This special horse, named Figure, became the very first horse of the Morgan breed. His strength and spirit helped create a whole new type of horse that is still loved today.
From Book to Big Screen
Justin Morgan Had a Horse was so popular that it was made into a movie! In 1972, Disney Studios turned the book into a film. The movie starred Don Murray as the kind schoolteacher, Justin Morgan. Another actor, John Smith, who was known from the TV show Laramie, played the part of Mr. Ames in the film.
