A Lifelong Wrestling Fan
How It All Started
Justin Roberts became a huge professional wrestling fan after watching an episode of Saturday Night's Main Event. He was also inspired after meeting wrestlers Kerry Von Erich and The Ultimate Warrior at a hotel. These moments made him want to be part of the wrestling world. He even trained for a short time to be a referee just so he could be in the ring with his favorite wrestler, Curt Hennig.
Roberts started his career as a ring announcer when he was only 16 years old. He worked for a local wrestling company called Pro Wrestling International. While he was studying at the University of Arizona, he announced for several other independent wrestling groups.
Career as a Ring Announcer
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
In 2002, Roberts got his big break and joined WWE. He started on the SmackDown! show and later moved to the Raw brand. He was the main announcer for the ECW show until 2007.
A major highlight of his career was announcing the main event at WrestleMania XXIV in 2008. This match was between the famous wrestlers Edge and The Undertaker.
Starting in 2009, Roberts became the main announcer for Raw, taking over for the previous announcer, Lilian Garcia. He also announced for the show WWE Superstars. At WrestleMania XXVII, he had the honor of being the only announcer for the entire event.
The Nexus Incident
On an episode of Raw in June 2010, Roberts was part of a memorable storyline. He was attacked in the ring by a group of new wrestlers called The Nexus. During the attack, one of the wrestlers, Daniel Bryan, grabbed Roberts by his tie. This moment was considered very intense for WWE's TV-PG programming. Bryan returned to WWE a few months later at the SummerSlam event.
Leaving WWE
On October 13, 2014, WWE decided not to renew Roberts's contract. This ended his 12-year career with the company. After leaving, Roberts announced that he would be writing a book about his life and experiences.
Working in Other Promotions
After WWE, Roberts didn't stop announcing. He worked as a guest announcer for events like House of Hardcore. In 2016, he announced a special match between wrestling legends Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio.
In 2018, Roberts was a commentator and ring announcer for the major independent wrestling event, All In.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW)
On April 3, 2019, Roberts joined the newly formed All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as their main ring announcer. Fans know him there by his nickname, "The Dapper Yapper," because of his sharp suits and powerful voice.
Professional Fighters League
In 2023, Roberts also began announcing for the Professional Fighters League, an MMA organization.
Outside of Wrestling
Besides wrestling, Roberts has appeared in movies and TV shows. As a child, he was an extra in films like Sleepless in Seattle and Blue Chips. As an adult, he had small roles in movies like The Guardian and Soul Food.
He also appeared in an episode of The Jerry Springer Show and the TV series Graves.
In 2017, he published his autobiography, Best Seat in the House, which tells the story of his career.
