A Look Back: Jutland's History
Jutland has an interesting past, especially with its connection to railroads and farming.
Railroad Connections
In 1875, the Lehigh Valley Railroad built its main railway line through Jutland. This line connected important cities like Buffalo, New York and New York City. In the early 1900s, a train station, called a depot, was built in Jutland. Today, this railway line is known as the Lehigh Line and is used by the Norfolk Southern Railway.
Farming and Local Businesses
Jutland was once a busy place for selling farm products. Farmers would send their fresh fruit and milk from Jutland to New York City. The Hunterdon County Fruit Exchange, a place where fruit was gathered and sold, was located here. In 1889, they handled about 16,000 baskets of peaches!
Jutland also had many local businesses that helped the community. There was a post office, a store for farm tools, a blacksmith, and a large store for fertilizer and animal feed. It also had a school, which is now a day-care center, and a town hall.
