Jutta Bauer was born in Volksdorf, a part of Hamburg, Germany, on January 9, 1955. She loved art from a young age. From 1975 to 1981, she studied design at the Technical College of Design in Hamburg. This is where she learned many of the skills she would use throughout her career.

After her studies, Jutta Bauer began working as an illustrator for children's books. She also drew cartoons for a popular women's magazine called Brigitte. Her talent for drawing was clear in all her work, whether it was for a magazine or a storybook.

Winning Big Awards for Her Art

Jutta Bauer received many important awards for her contributions to children's literature. In 2001, she won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (German Youth Literature Award) for her picture book titled Schreimutter. This award is one of the most important for children's books in Germany.

She was also a finalist for the same award in 2002 for her book Opas Engel (Grandpa's Angel). This story was inspired by children she saw playing outside her studio. In 2009, she received a special prize just for her incredible illustrations.

The Hans Christian Andersen Medal

The biggest honor for Jutta Bauer came in 2010. She was awarded the biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award by the International Board on Books for Young People. This award is given every two years to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature. It is considered the highest international recognition for creators of children's books. Winning this medal showed how much her work was loved and respected around the world.

Jutta Bauer lived in Hamburg for many years. She passed away on September 10, 2025, at the age of 70. She left behind a wonderful collection of books that continue to inspire and delight young readers.
