Early Career in Colombia
Jámison Olave started his football journey with Deportivo Cali in 2001. During his early years, he played for several other clubs in his home country, Colombia, on temporary deals called "loans." He returned to Deportivo Cali in 2005. In that season, Olave helped his team win the 2005 Finalización championship. He played in 97 league games for Cali and scored two goals.
Playing in Major League Soccer
In January 2008, Olave moved to the United States to play for Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer (MLS). He first joined on a one-year loan. On October 9, 2008, he scored Real Salt Lake's first goal at their new stadium, Rio Tinto Stadium. This goal helped his team get a 1–1 tie against New York Red Bulls.
Olave signed a permanent contract with Real Salt Lake in November 2008. He stayed with the team until 2012. He became known as one of the best central defenders in MLS. His large size (6-foot-3 and 220 pounds), speed, and strength made him a tough player to beat. In 2010, he won the MLS Defender of the Year Award. He was also chosen for the starting team in the MLS All-Star Games in 2010 and 2011. During his five years with Real Salt Lake, Olave played in 120 league matches and scored 10 goals. He also helped the team win the 2009 MLS Cup, which is a big championship in American soccer.
Moving to New York and Back
On December 3, 2012, Olave was traded to the New York Red Bulls. He made his first appearance for New York on March 3, 2013, and even scored a goal in a 3–3 tie against Portland Timbers. He also scored in a game against Chicago Fire SC and in a derby match against D.C. United. In his first season with New York, Olave played in 29 league games and scored 4 goals. He helped the Red Bulls win their first major trophy, the MLS Supporters' Shield.
On December 10, 2014, Olave was traded back to his old team, Real Salt Lake. He played for them for two more seasons before announcing he would leave the club on November 14, 2016.
Life in the United States
Olave received his U.S. green card in the summer of 2010. This meant he was considered a "domestic player" for MLS teams, which helped his career in the league.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Jámison Olave decided to become a coach.
Coaching Real Monarchs
On January 6, 2017, Olave was hired as a defensive coach for Real Monarchs. This team is connected to Real Salt Lake. He worked under head coach Mike Petke. Later, he became an assistant coach for the Monarchs under Mark Briggs. Olave then served as the interim (temporary) head coach for the Monarchs before being named the permanent head coach on November 20, 2019. He coached the Real Monarchs until 2023.
