Jörg Schönbohm (born September 2, 1937 – died February 7, 2019) was an important German politician. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, which is a major political party in Germany. Before becoming a politician, he was a high-ranking military officer. He reached the rank of Lieutenant General in the German army, known as the Bundeswehr.

Early Life and Military Career

Jörg Schönbohm was born in Neu Golm, Germany, in 1937. He joined the German army, the Bundeswehr, and had a successful military career. He became a Lieutenant General, which is a very senior position.

In 1990, after Germany was reunified, he became the first commander of the Bundeswehr Eastern Command. This was a new role to help combine the armies of East and West Germany. In 1991, he was made the Inspector of the Army. This meant he was the highest-ranking officer in the German Army. He retired from the military in 1992. After that, he worked in the Federal Ministry of Defence. He was an Undersecretary for Security Policy.

Political Career

After his military career, Jörg Schönbohm entered politics. He joined the Christian Democratic Union of Germany party.

Senator for the Interior of Berlin

From 1996 to 1998, Schönbohm served as the Senator of the Interior for the city of Berlin. In this role, he was responsible for the city's internal security and public order. This included overseeing the police and other security services in Berlin.

Minister of the Interior of Brandenburg

Later, from 1999 to 2009, he held a similar position for the state of Brandenburg. He was the Interior Minister for Brandenburg. As Interior Minister, he was in charge of the state's police force and other important security matters. He also served as the Deputy Minister President of Brandenburg during part of this time.

Later Life and Death

Jörg Schönbohm retired from his political roles in 2009. He passed away on February 7, 2019, at the age of 81. He is remembered for his long service in both the military and in German politics.
