About the Volumes
The first two parts of Köhler's Medicinal Plants came out in 1887 and 1890. The first part had 84 colorful pictures. The second part had 110 colorful pictures.
A third part was added in 1898. This part included 80 more color pictures. The publisher had planned a fourth part, but it was never released.
How the Pictures Were Made
All the beautiful color pictures in the book were made using a special printing method. This method is called chromolithography. It allowed for very detailed and colorful images.
The artists who drew the plants were Walther Otto Müller, C. F. Schmidt, and K. Gunther. They were botanical illustrators. This means they specialized in drawing plants.
