Kʼakʼ Joplaj Chan Kʼawiil became the 14th ruler of Copán, an important ancient Maya city. He took power on 7 June 738. This was about 39 days after the previous ruler, Uaxaclajuun Ubʼaah Kʼawiil, was defeated.

Not much is known about Kʼakʼ Joplaj Chan Kʼawiil's time as ruler. This is because fewer new stone monuments were built in Copán after a big defeat by a nearby city called Quiriguá.

The Fall of Copán's Power

Copán's defeat had a huge impact on the city. It lost control over some of its lands and cities. It also lost an important trade route along the Motagua River. This river was key for moving goods.

How Quiriguá Grew Stronger

Because Copán lost the trade route, its income went down. At the same time, Quiriguá's wealth grew. Quiriguá, which used to be under Copán's control, started building many new monuments and grand buildings. This shows how powerful Quiriguá became. It's even possible that Copán had to follow Quiriguá's rules for a while.

The End of His Reign

Kʼakʼ Joplaj Chan Kʼawiil ruled Copán for about 11 years. He died in January 749.
