Kanchi Krishnaswamy Rao (1845–1923) was an important Indian leader. He worked as a government official, a judge, and a top administrator. From 1898 to 1904, he served as the Diwan of Travancore. A Diwan was like a prime minister or chief minister for a princely state in India.

Early Life and Education

Krishnaswamy Rao was born in Salem in September 1845. His father, Kanchi Venkata Rao, was a government official. He worked at the District Collectorate, which is like a main government office.

Krishnaswamy Rao went to school and finished his studies. At just sixteen years old, he began working for the government. This was a common path for smart young people back then.

A Career in Public Service

Krishnaswamy Rao started his career in October 1864. He worked as a record-keeper in the Nellore district court. His starting salary was 20 rupees a month.

He was very good at his job. Because of his skills, he was promoted in 1867. He became a Sheristadar, which was a higher administrative role. In July 1870, he became a District Munsiff. This meant he was a judge in a local court.

Rising Through the Ranks

In 1883, Krishnaswamy Rao was appointed as a sub-judge. He worked in a place called Cocanada. His hard work and talent were clearly noticed.

In May 1894, he became the Chief Justice of Travancore. This was a very important position. He was the top judge in the entire state. He served in this role until 1898.

Becoming Diwan of Travancore

In 1898, Krishnaswamy Rao was chosen for an even bigger role. He became the Diwan of Travancore. As Diwan, he was the chief minister. He helped the Maharaja (the ruler) manage the state. He worked to improve things for the people of Travancore.

He served as Diwan for six years, until 1904. During his time, he made many important decisions. He helped to run the government and keep things organized.

Special Recognition

In November 1901, Krishnaswamy Rao received a special honor. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE). This was a high award given by the British government. It recognized his important contributions and service.

Later Life

Kanchi Krishnaswamy Rao passed away in 1923. He is remembered for his long and successful career. He dedicated his life to public service in India.
