What is a Kaassoufflé?
The idea for the kaassoufflé might have come from Indonesian street food called gorengan. You can buy them frozen to fry at home. Or, you can get them at snackbars in the Netherlands. It's one of the few vegetarian fast-food options there!
Some Dutch fast-food places, like FEBO or Smullers, have special vending machines called automatiek. You can put coins in and get a kaassoufflé right away, without waiting in line. This snack is also popular at a borrel. A borrel is a fun, informal Dutch get-together with drinks and snacks.
Different Shapes and Flavors
Kaassoufflés usually come in two shapes. One is a rectangle, about 10 cm by 5 cm (4 by 2 inches). The other is shaped like a half-moon, about 10 cm (5 inches) long.
There are also smaller ones called mini-kaassoufflés. People often buy these for home or for a borrel. They are usually part of a bittergarnituur, which is a mix of snacks served with drinks.
While most kaassoufflés have a cheese like Gouda, they can have other fillings too. Sometimes, you'll find them with ham and spinach mixed with the cheese. Or, they might use completely different kinds of cheese. You can also make a kaassoufflé in the oven. For this, you wrap a slice of cheese in puff pastry and bake it.
It's important to know that a kaassoufflé is not like a fancy French soufflé. A real soufflé is light and airy, while a kaassoufflé is a fried snack. Even though they share a name in Dutch, they are very different!
How to Enjoy a Kaassoufflé
People often eat a kaassoufflé by itself. But it's also tasty with sauces like mustard, mayonnaise, regular ketchup, or curried ketchup. If you want a bigger meal, you can get a broodje kaassoufflé. This is simply the snack served inside a bun.
