The Kadayawan Festival is a big yearly celebration in Davao City, Philippines. It's a special time to celebrate life and say "thank you" for all the good things. People give thanks for nature's gifts, their rich culture, good harvests, and peaceful living.

This festival usually happens in the third week of August. It highlights the 11 different tribes of Davao City. Sometimes, the celebration lasts longer, like in 2019 when it ran from August 2 to 31. In 2020, it was held from August 10 to 17.

One of the most exciting parts of Kadayawan is the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan. This means "street dancing." It's a colorful show of the many different cultures in the region. Various communities from Mindanao dance in bright costumes. Their dances show off their unique traditions and heritage.

The History of Kadayawan

The Kadayawan Festival has an interesting past. It started with a simple idea to bring people together.

How it Began

In 1970, the mayor at the time, Elias B. Lopez, had an idea. He asked all the tribes in Davao to share their thanksgiving rituals. These were special ceremonies where they showed gratitude for their blessings.

A New Name: Apo Duwaling

Later, in 1986, the government of Davao City wanted to unite everyone. This was during a difficult time for the country. The festival was then called "Apo Duwaling." This name was a mix of three important natural symbols of Davao.

What Does Apo Duwaling Mean?

  • Mt. Apo is the tallest mountain in the Philippines.
  • Durian is a famous fruit that grows a lot in Davao.
  • Waling-waling is a beautiful orchid flower found in the region.

Kadayawan Festival is Born

In 1988, the festival got its official name. The mayor at that time, Rodrigo Duterte, named it the "Kadayawan Festival." The word "Kadayawan" comes from the friendly greeting "Madayaw." This word means good, valuable, or beautiful. It truly captures the spirit of the festival.
