About Kader Abdolah's Life
Kader Abdolah comes from an important family. He is a descendant of Mirza Abu'l-Qasem Qa'em-Maqam. Mirza Abu'l-Qasem was an Iranian politician and writer from the Qajar period.
Kader Abdolah always wanted to be a writer. After the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, he began his writing career. He wrote articles for leftist political newspapers.
In the 1980s, he wrote two novels. These books were published secretly. This was because of strict political rules at the time. The books were called What are the Kurds saying? and Kurdistan after the resistance party.
When he moved to the Netherlands, he felt lost. He thought his political work was the most important part of his life. Learning Dutch and writing in this new language helped him. It gave him a new purpose, like a new fight through literature.
Kader Abdolah's Career Journey
Kader Abdolah studied physics in Arak, Iran. He graduated in 1977. After college, he served in the Iranian Navy.
During the Iranian Revolution, he joined a group. This group was against the Shah and later the Khomeini government. In 1988, he had to leave Iran. He came to the Netherlands as a political refugee.
In 2006, he was a special writer at Leiden University. Today, he lives in Delft. He writes under the name Kader Abdolah. This name honors two friends who were executed.
His book Het huis van de moskee (The House of the Mosque) became very popular. It was a bestseller in the Netherlands. In 2007, people voted it the second-best Dutch novel ever. This was in a survey by NRC Handelsblad and NPS. The English version of the book came out in 2010.
