Hossein Sadjadi Ghaemmaghami Farahani, known as Kader Abdolah, is a famous writer, poet, and columnist. He was born in Arak, Iran, on November 12, 1954. Kader Abdolah is from both Iran and the Netherlands. He writes his books in Dutch, but they often share stories and ideas from Persian culture. You might also see him on Dutch TV shows.

Kader Abdolah's Life Story
Kader Abdolah comes from a family with a long history. He is a descendant of Mirza Abu'l-Qasem Qa'em-Maqam. This person was an important Iranian politician and also loved art and literature.
Becoming a Writer
Kader Abdolah always dreamed of becoming an author. After the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, he started his writing career. He wrote articles for newspapers that supported certain political ideas.
In the 1980s, he wrote two novels. These books were published secretly because of strict rules about what could be written. The books were titled What are the Kurds saying? and Kurdistan after the resistance party.
Moving to the Netherlands
Kader Abdolah moved to the Netherlands as a political refugee in 1988. At first, he felt sad because he thought his political work was over. Learning Dutch and writing in this new language became a new way for him to express himself. Writing became his new important goal.
Kader Abdolah's Career
Kader Abdolah studied physics at Arak College of Science in Iran. He finished his studies in 1977. After college, he served in the Iranian Navy. During the revolution, he joined groups that were against the government at the time.
Writing Success
Kader Abdolah lives in Delft, Netherlands. He uses a special pen name, "Kader Abdolah." This name is made from the names of two friends who were executed.
His book Het huis van de moskee (which means The House of the Mosque) became a huge bestseller in the Netherlands. In 2007, people voted it the second-best Dutch novel ever in an online survey. The English version of this book came out in January 2010.

Awards and Recognitions
Kader Abdolah has received many awards for his writing.
- In 1993, his first book, De adelaars, was the best-selling first book of the year.
- In 1997, he won the Dutch Media Prize for his book Mirza.
- In 2000, he received the E. du Perronprijs for his novel Spijkerschrift.
- He was made a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2000. This is a very high honor in the Netherlands.
- In 2008, France made him a Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature.
- In 2009, he received an honorary doctor degree from the University of Groningen.
- In 2011, he was asked to write a special book, De Kraai, for the Boekenweek. This is a yearly event in the Netherlands that celebrates books.
