Kai Setälä facts for kids
Kai Martin Edvard Setälä (born September 13, 1913, in Pori; died May 12, 2005, in Helsinki) was an important Finnish doctor and a professor at the University of Helsinki. He studied how diseases affect the body, which is called pathological anatomy. Kai Setälä was also the grandfather of Alexander Stubb, who became the 13th President of Finland. His great-uncle was E. N. Setälä, a famous Finnish leader who helped write Finland's Declaration of Independence.
Early Life and Education
Kai Setälä's parents were Emil Eino Fredrik Setälä, a pharmacist, and Helmi Emilia Snellman. He finished school in Nurmes in 1933. He then went on to study medicine.
Setälä earned his medical degree in 1941. In the same year, he completed his doctorate in medicine and surgery. This meant he had done advanced research in the medical field.
Medical Career
In 1942, Kai Setälä married Inger Maria Torsdotter Ekman. He became a specialist in x-ray examination and treatment in 1946. Later, in 1949, he also became a specialist in using radiation therapy to treat cancer.
Setälä worked at the University of Helsinki as a docent, which is a type of lecturer, from 1948 to 1953. After that, he became a full professor. Before becoming a professor, he worked at the university and in several different hospitals.
He held many important positions both in Finland and other countries. For example, he was a founding member and vice-chairman of the Cancer Foundation
in the late 1940s. This foundation helps with cancer research and treatment.Other Interests
