Kaie Kellough's Books and Poems
Kaie Kellough has written many different kinds of books. He has published three books of poetry. He also has two audio recordings, a novel, and a collection of short stories.
He is also known for "vocal sound poetry." This is a special way of performing poetry using sounds from the voice. His work often uses many voices and layers of sound. He explores how we make language and how it works.
Accordéon: A Unique Novel
His first novel was called Accordéon. It is an experimental book. It reads like a transcript of someone being asked questions. Three people from a "Ministry of Culture" are asking the questions.
The story was inspired by a big discussion in Quebec. This discussion was about a proposed "Quebec Charter of Values." This charter was a set of ideas about how people should live together. Accordéon was nominated for the Amazon.ca First Novel Award. A reviewer called it a "remarkable work." It shows Montreal as a city with many different stories and ideas.
Magnetic Equator: A Poetry Collection
For a while, Kaie mostly focused on his sound work. He didn't write many poems. But in 2017, he met another writer, Dionne Brand, at a festival. This meeting inspired him to gather his poems. These poems became his book Magnetic Equator.
Awards and Recognition
Kaie Kellough has won many awards for his writing. His poetry collection Magnetic Equator (2019) won the 2020 Griffin Poetry Prize. This is one of the biggest awards for poetry in Canada.
His short story collection Dominoes at the Crossroads (2020) also won awards. It won the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction. This was at the 2020 Quebec Writers' Federation Awards. The book was also nominated for the Giller Prize in 2020. The Giller Prize is a very important award for Canadian fiction.
Kaie Kellough is the first person to be nominated for both the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Giller Prize in the same year.
