King Kakustha belonged to the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. He was the older son of a brother of another famous king, Nagabhata I. Kakustha's younger brother, Devaraja, later became king after him. Kakustha and Devaraja ruled their kingdom around the years 760 CE to 780 CE.

What Do We Know About Kakustha?

Most of what we know about Kakustha comes from an old stone writing called the Gwalior inscription. This inscription was made by a later king named Mihira Bhoja. It tells us that King Kakustha made his family's name even more famous. The inscription also mentions that Kakustha had a special nickname: Kakkuka. This name meant "one who always laughs," which suggests he might have been a cheerful person!
