Kalaeloa (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kəlɐe̯ˈlowə]) is a special community in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a specific area defined for counting people. In 2020, about 2,364 people lived there.
Kalaeloa is located where the Naval Air Station Barbers Point used to be. This military base closed in 1999. The land was then given to the State of Hawaiʻi. The name Ka lae loa means "long point" in the Hawaiian language. It's the original name for the area known as Barbers Point on Oʻahu. The area got the name Barbers Point because Captain Henry Barber's ship crashed on a coral reef there in 1796.
After the naval base closed, the state of Hawaii worked to develop the area. The old runways and buildings of the Naval Air Station are now part of Kalaeloa Airport.

Kalaeloa's History
The name Barbers Point comes from an event in October 1795. A ship called the Arthur, led by Captain Henry Barber, was sailing to China. It stopped in Hawaiʻi for supplies. After leaving Pearl Harbor, the ship crashed on a reef during high waves and was completely destroyed. Six crew members sadly drowned. Captain Barber and the other fifteen crew members made it safely to shore in small boats. From then on, the place where the ship wrecked became known as Barbers Point.
