Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (born March 24, 1936 – died November 9, 2013) was an American musician. He was famous for playing the tenor saxophone in a style called free jazz.

About Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre

Maurice McIntyre was born in Clarksville, Arkansas, USA. But he grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He studied music at the Chicago College of Music. In the 1960s, he started playing with other talented musicians. Some of these included Malachi Favors, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Roscoe Mitchell.

In 1965, he joined a special music group. This group was called the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). It was a place for musicians to explore new sounds. His first album as a solo artist came out in 1969. During this time, he also played on other artists' recordings. This is known as being a session musician. He worked for Delmark Records and played with musicians like George Freeman.

Moving to New York

In the 1970s, McIntyre moved to New York City. He played music at Sam Rivers's Rivbea Studios. He also taught music at Karl Berger's Creative Studio. He and Muhal Richard Abrams went on tour in Europe several times.

After his live album in 1981, McIntyre recorded less often. He sometimes played his music on the streets and in the subways of New York. His next big recording was not until 1998. For this, he played with Pheeroan akLaff and Michael Logan. The next year, he played with many AACM members on an album called Bright Moments. He continued to release his own music into the 2000s.

He passed away in November 2013. He was 77 years old and died in The Bronx, New York.
