Kalem is a small community located in the middle of Scott County, Mississippi, in the United States. It is close to a town called Morton.

The History of Kalem

Kalem was officially formed in 1911. Before that, it was an older settlement known as Concord. In its early days, Kalem was an important stop for trains. It served as a "flag stop" where trains would stop if someone waved a flag. It also had a water tank for steam locomotives. This was part of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad line.

What Kalem Grew and Made

Long ago, Kalem was famous for its farms. Farmers grew many different crops. These included corn, cotton, peanuts, and sugarcane. They also grew potatoes and other vegetables.

Kalem's Economy Today

Today, Kalem's economy is different. It mostly relies on farming related to animals. There are many "chicken houses" where chickens are raised. There are also large areas of land used as cow pastures.
