The Kalkadoon Wars were a series of conflicts in Australia. They happened between European settlers and the Kalkadoon people of the Mount Isa region. These events took place in western Queensland from about 1870 to 1890.
What Caused the Conflict?
European settlers began moving into the Kalkadoon people's traditional lands around 1860. At first, relations between the groups were peaceful. However, as more and more new settlers arrived, tensions grew. The Kalkadoon people eventually began to use guerrilla warfare. This is a type of fighting where small groups use surprise attacks and quick retreats.
The Battle of Battle Mountain
A major event in these conflicts happened in 1884. A serious incident occurred where five native police and a well-known pastoralist lost their lives. A pastoralist is someone who owns or manages a large farm for raising sheep or cattle.
The Queensland Government responded by sending in heavily armed police. These police forces then fought against the Kalkadoon people at a place called Battle Mountain. The European forces were ultimately victorious in this battle.
