Political Journey
Kalonzo Musyoka first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1983. He ran for the Kitui North area but did not win. At that time, Kenya had only one political party, Kenya African National Union (KANU).
Becoming an MP and Early Roles
In 1985, the Kitui North seat became available. Musyoka won the special election, becoming an MP at 32 years old. In 1986, he became an Assistant Minister for Works. He held this role until 1988.
He was re-elected in 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he served as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. He was also a key leader in the KANU party.
Serving in Parliament (1992-2007)
Kenya held its first multi-party elections in 1992. Musyoka remained with the KANU party and kept his seat in Parliament. He was then appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. He held other ministerial positions while in the KANU government.
In 1993, he spoke at the World Conference on Human Rights in Austria. He talked about how illegal mineral trade causes conflicts and poverty.
He was re-elected to Parliament in 1997. This time, he represented the Mwingi North Constituency.
Before the 2002 general election, he left KANU. He joined the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This party was part of the National Rainbow Coalition, which won the elections.
In 2003, as Minister for Home Affairs, he welcomed people to a meeting about peace in the region. He had been involved in the Sudan peace process from 1993 to 1997.
Ministerial Changes and Referendum
Under President Mwai Kibaki, Musyoka became Minister for Foreign Affairs again. However, in 2004, he was moved to Minister for Environment. He was also removed from his role in peace talks. This happened because he was reportedly unhappy that President Kibaki did not honor an agreement they had made.
He was a leader in the "No" campaign during the November 2005 referendum. This campaign was against the proposed new constitution. After the "No" side won, he was removed from the Cabinet.
After this, Kalonzo Musyoka left the LDP. He joined a smaller party called the Labor Party of Kenya.
Presidential Election (2007)
Many people expected Kalonzo Musyoka to run for president in the December 2007 election. He sought the ODM-Kenya party ticket. His popularity dropped, and people wondered if he would make a big impact.
The ODM-Kenya party split into two groups in August 2007. One group supported Musyoka, and the other supported Raila Odinga. Musyoka was chosen as his group's presidential candidate on August 31, 2007.
Musyoka launched his presidential campaign in Nairobi on October 14, 2007. He stated that "the war against poverty could not be won unless environmental issues were addressed."
After the 2007 Election
In the 2007 election, Musyoka finished third. After the election, there was a violent crisis. Despite this, President Kibaki appointed Musyoka as Vice-President and Minister of Home Affairs on January 8, 2008. Musyoka took office on January 9.
The political crisis ended with a power-sharing agreement between Kibaki and Odinga. In the new government formed in April 2008, Musyoka remained Vice-President.
In 2010, Musyoka supported the new draft constitution. This was for the August 4 referendum. Some people joked that he was like a "watermelon" because they thought he secretly opposed the draft.
Elections in 2013 and 2017
For the 2013 presidential election, Kalonzo Musyoka joined Raila Odinga. They formed the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD). Musyoka decided not to run for president himself and became Odinga's running mate.
When the election happened on March 4, 2013, Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner. Odinga challenged this result in court, but the court dismissed the case. Musyoka left office when Uhuru Kenyatta became president.
In the 2017 general election, Musyoka again joined Raila Odinga. They formed the National Super Alliance to challenge President Kenyatta. Musyoka served as Odinga's running mate once more.
2022 Elections
In the 2022 elections, Musyoka first announced he would run for president. However, he later decided not to and supported Azimio la Umoja candidate Raila Odinga.
