The National Super Alliance, often called NASA, was a big political team in Kenya. It was formed in January 2017 by several political parties that were not in power. These parties joined forces to work together.
Some of the main parties that formed NASA included the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wiper Democratic Movement (Wiper), Forum for the Restoration of Democracy - Kenya (FORD-Kenya), and Amani National Congress (ANC). Many other smaller parties also joined this alliance.

What is a Political Alliance?
A political alliance is like a super-team made of different political parties. Imagine several sports teams deciding to play together to win a big championship. In politics, parties form alliances to gain more power and win elections. They combine their supporters and resources.
Why Parties Form Alliances
Political parties often form alliances for a few key reasons.
- More Votes: By working together, they can get more people to vote for them. Each party brings its own supporters to the alliance.
- Shared Goals: They might have similar ideas about how to run the country. Joining forces helps them achieve these shared goals.
- Stronger Voice: An alliance makes their voice louder and more powerful. It's harder for one small party to win alone.
NASA's Goals in 2017
In the 2017 General Elections in Kenya, NASA had a clear goal. They wanted to win the presidency and other government positions. Their main aim was to replace the president who was in office at the time.
Who Led NASA?
For the 2017 elections, the main leader of the NASA alliance was Raila Amollo Odinga. He was like the captain of the team. His running mate, who would become vice-president if they won, was Kalonzo Musyoka. They worked together to try and win against the sitting president, Uhuru Kenyatta.
Understanding Elections
General elections are a time when citizens vote for their leaders. People vote for who they want to represent them in government. This includes choosing a president, members of parliament, and other local leaders. It's how people decide who will make important decisions for the country.
