Kanawha City is a friendly neighborhood located in the city of Charleston, West Virginia. It's part of Kanawha County. You can find it in the southeastern area of Charleston, right along a main road called WV 61 (MacCorkle Avenue).

When you enter Kanawha City from the 35th Street bridge, you'll see a sign welcoming you. This area has many small shops and homes. Most of the stores, malls, and places to eat are in the southern part of the neighborhood.

History of Kanawha City

Kanawha City began to grow in the 1890s. A former governor of West Virginia, William A. MacCorkle, helped start its development. He worked with other business people to build up the area.

Later, in 1929, Kanawha City officially became part of the city of Charleston. Before it was known as Kanawha City, it was sometimes called Owens.
