Who Was Raja Kanchumarthi Ramachandra Rao?
Kanchumarthi Venkata Seetha Ramachandra Rao was adopted by Kanchumarthi Narasayya Naidu. He came from a respected Telaga family in Rajahmundry. When his adoptive father passed away at an early age, his uncle, Raja Vogeti Ramakrishnayya Naidu, took care of his family's property. Ramachandra Rao took over his estate around 1890. He was also a childhood friend of Tanguturi Prakasam, another important figure. He was one of the first people to join the board of trustees for the Rajahmundry town hall, which was started by Kandukuri Veeresalingam.
His Early Life
Even when he was young, Ramachandra Rao was very interested in politics and starting businesses. His uncle, Vogeti Ramakrishnayya Naidu, had many businesses. Seeing this, Ramachandra Rao became interested in industry. He later invested some of his own money into businesses.
Getting Involved in Politics
Ramachandra Rao was elected to the Rajahmundry municipal council two times. This council helped manage the city. Later, he joined the Justice Party, a political group. People saw him as someone who continued the important political work of Vogeti Ramakrishnayya Naidu. He also served as a trustee for the Korukonda Devasthanam, which is a temple. He was also nominated for the title of Diwan Bahadur, an honor given by the British.
Making a Difference: Social Work
Raja Kanchumarthi Ramachandra Rao gave a lot of money to help his community. He was a key person in developing the Gowthami Grandhalayam, a large library. He also took part in India's struggle for freedom from British rule. He was important in organizing Bipin Chandra Pal's visit to India. In 1921, he built a special building to help women. He did this to honor his daughter, Babayamma, who was one of the first women in Rajahmundry to finish high school.
His Family and Legacy
Raja Kanchumarthi Ramachandra Rao passed away in 1926. He had three sons: Kanchumarthi Parthasaradhi, Kanchumarthi Venakata Sita Ramarao, and Kanchumarthi Venkata Subbarao.
His family's ancestors were military leaders and local rulers for the Vijayanagara dynasty. They were part of the Meraka Veedhi Telagas, a group of families who moved to Rajahmundry after the Vijayanagara Empire fell. They settled in an area called Merakaveedhi. These families later served the Nawab of Rajahmundry and held high positions in the British Company Army. Many of them became important landowners, Zamindars, and politicians. Important people from these families include Vogeti Ramakrishnayya Naidu. Even today, some of these families still have old swords and weapons from the 15th century in their homes.
