Kanem is one of the 23 regions in the country of Chad. Its capital city is Mao. The region is named after the historic Kanem Empire, which was a powerful kingdom in this part of Africa many centuries ago.
About Kanem Region
Kanem is located in the western part of Chad. It is known for its desert landscapes and oases. The region is home to many different ethnic groups. They often live in small villages and towns.
History of Kanem
The Kanem region has a long and interesting history. It was once the heart of the Kanem Empire. This empire existed for over a thousand years. It was very important for trade routes across the Sahara Desert.
The modern Kanem region was officially created in 2002. Before that, it was known as the Kanem Prefecture. In 2008, a part of the region was separated. This new area became the Bahr el Gazel Region. This change helped to better organize the different parts of Chad.
How Kanem is Organized
Since 2008, the Kanem region is divided into three smaller areas called departments. Each department has its own capital city. These departments help manage the local government and services for the people living there.
The three departments are:
- Kanem (its capital is Mao)
- Nord Kanem (its capital is Nokou)
- Wadi Bissam (its capital is Mondo)
