Kangwŏn-do (강원도) is a province in North Korea. Its main city and capital is Wŏnsan.

Before 1945, when Korea was divided, Kangwŏn was part of a larger province. This original province included the area now known as Gangwon-do in South Korea. Both parts were once a single region. The highest point in Kangwŏn-do is a beautiful area called "Diamond Mountain."

History of Kangwŏn-do

For many years, the area known as Kangwŏn-do was united. However, after World War II in 1945, Korea was split into two countries: North Korea and South Korea. This division also split the original Kangwŏn province into two parts. One part became Kangwŏn-do in North Korea, and the other became Gangwon-do in South Korea. Even though they are now in different countries, they share a common history and name.

Kangwŏn-do is known for its beautiful natural scenery. The most famous natural feature is the "Diamond Mountain." This mountain range is very tall and has many stunning peaks and valleys. It is a significant landmark in the province. The province also has coastal areas along the sea, especially around its capital city, Wŏnsan.

Wŏnsan is the capital city of Kangwŏn-do. It is an important port city on the eastern coast of North Korea. Wŏnsan is a center for trade and transportation in the region. It also has a waterfront that is a notable feature of the city.
