Chander Kanta Gupta (born October 8, 1938 – died March 27, 2016) was a very important Canadian professor of mathematics. She taught at the University of Manitoba. She was famous for her work in a part of math called abstract algebra and group theory. This area of math studies how different groups of numbers or objects behave. She especially looked at how things change within these groups, which is called automorphisms.
Her Journey in Education
Chander Kanta Gupta loved learning. She earned her first university degree from the University of Jammu and Kashmir. Then, she got two master's degrees. One was from the Aligarh Muslim University and the other from the Australian National University. She continued her studies at the Australian National University and earned her Ph.D. in 1967. Her Ph.D. supervisor was a well-known mathematician named Michael Frederick Newman.
Awards and Recognition
Chander Kanta Gupta's amazing work in mathematics was recognized by many. In 1991, she was chosen to be part of the Royal Society of Canada. This is a special group that includes Canada's top scientists and scholars. Later, in 2000, she received the Krieger–Nelson Prize from the Canadian Mathematical Society. This award is given to outstanding women mathematicians in Canada.
Her Family
Chander Kanta Gupta's husband, Narain Gupta (1936–2008), was also a brilliant mathematician. He also studied at the Australian National University. Like his wife, he became a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Manitoba. They shared a love for math and teaching.
