Kapurthala State (ਕਪੂਰਥਲਾ in Gurmukhi, کپورتھلہ in Shahmukhi, कपूरथला in Devanagari) was a special kind of kingdom in East Punjab, India. It was known as a princely state because it was ruled by its own prince or king, but it was also connected to the British Empire. The capital city of this state was Kapurthala.

Kapurthala State was not very big, covering about 352 square miles. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of a large city or a small county. Even though it was small, it had a rich history and played an important part in the region.

What Was a Princely State?

A princely state was a territory in India that was not directly ruled by the British. Instead, it had its own local ruler, often called a Maharaja or Nawab. These rulers had some power over their lands, but they had to agree to certain rules set by the British. For example, they couldn't make their own foreign policy or declare war.

How Princely States Were Formed

Many princely states existed in India for hundreds of years before the British arrived. When the British East India Company started gaining power, they made agreements with these local rulers. This allowed the British to control large parts of India without directly governing every single area. It was a way for them to manage a vast country with fewer resources.

Life in a Princely State

Life in a princely state could be different from areas under direct British rule. The local ruler often had a big influence on daily life, laws, and culture. Some rulers were very progressive, bringing in new schools, hospitals, and roads. Others were more traditional. Kapurthala State was known for its rulers who were interested in modernizing their state.

The Rulers of Kapurthala

It shows his love for European architecture and his desire to make Kapurthala beautiful and grand. Today, this palace is used as a school, the Sainik School Kapurthala.

Kapurthala State Joins India

When India gained its independence from British rule in 1947, all the princely states had to decide whether to join India or Pakistan. Kapurthala State chose to join India.

The process of princely states joining India was called 'integration'. The rulers signed agreements to become part of the new independent India. This was a big moment in history, as it brought all these different kingdoms together to form one large nation.
