Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Karangura (also known as Karanguru or Garanguru) were an Indigenous Australian group from South Australia. They were one of the many unique peoples who lived on the Australian continent for thousands of years.

Who Were the Karangura People?

The Karangura people were a distinct group of Indigenous Australians. They had their own culture, traditions, and way of life. Like many Indigenous groups, they lived closely with the land. Their history is an important part of Australia's past.

Where Did They Live?

The Karangura people lived in a specific area of South Australia. Their traditional lands covered about 3,200 square miles (8,300 km2) (around 8,288 square kilometers). This area was south of a place called Alton Downs Station. It was along a waterway known as Eyre Creek. This creek sometimes had water and sometimes was dry.

Their eastern boundary reached Pandi Pandi. To the south, their land extended to the northern edge of Goyder Lagoon. They also lived near the Eleanor River. These areas were important for their survival and culture.

How Were Their Communities Organized?

The Karangura people lived in smaller groups. These groups are sometimes called "hordes" or "bands." There were about 14 such groups within the Karangura nation. Each group likely had its own leaders and responsibilities. This way of living helped them manage resources. It also allowed them to move across their land. They could find food and water as the seasons changed.

Other Names for the Karangura
