Karen Boswall is a talented filmmaker who creates documentaries. She is especially known for the films she made while living and working in Mozambique from 1993 to 2007. Karen also teaches about visual anthropology at the University of Kent. Her movies explore many different topics, like protecting the ocean, popular music, and how people can find peace after difficult times.

Karen Boswall's Filmmaking Journey
Before moving to Mozambique, Karen Boswall had her own film company in Britain. She has traveled all over the world, working as a sound recordist, producer, and director. While in Mozambique, she created many radio features for the BBC World Service.
Documentaries About Mozambique
In 1999, Karen started directing TV documentaries again. Her films Living Battles (1998) and From the Ashes (1999) both looked at the civil war that had recently ended in Mozambique.
Dancing on the Edge (2001) is a movie about the challenges young women face as they grow up in Mozambique. It shows how poverty and old traditions can make it harder for them to stay healthy. This film was the first made by Catembe Productions, Karen's own company. This company creates educational programs and shows for children.
Music and Stories
Karen Boswall's 2004 film, Marrabenta Stories, is a documentary about music. It follows young Mozambican musicians who play jazz, funk, and hip-hop. These younger artists join older musicians who play traditional Marrabenta dance music. Together, they go on a tour of South Africa.
Karen also worked on a project with writer Jose Eduardo Agualusa. They wanted to make a film with lots of music about the lives of women in southern Africa. This project was going to be called "My Father's Wives." The research they did for the film later became a book by Agualusa in 2008, also called "My Father's Wives." You could even think of the book as the script for the movie they planned to make.
