Karen Rhea facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Karen Rhea is a brilliant American mathematics educator. She is a special kind of professor, called a Collegiate Lecturer Emerita, in the math department at the University of Michigan. Before joining the University of Michigan, she taught at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Helping Students Learn Math

Karen Rhea has done a lot to help students learn math, especially a subject called calculus. She worked with a team of experts, including Andrew M. Gleason and Deborah Hughes Hallett, to write several calculus textbooks. These books were created by a group known as the Harvard Calculus Consortium, which is like a team from Harvard University and other places working together to make math easier to understand.

She also strongly supported a cool way of learning called "flipped classrooms" for teaching calculus. Imagine doing your "homework" (like watching videos or reading about a topic) at home, and then doing the "classwork" (like solving problems with your teacher's help) in school! That's how a flipped classroom works.

Awards and Recognition

Karen Rhea has won some really important awards for being an amazing math teacher.

  • In 1998, a part of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in Louisiana and Mississippi gave her an award for being an outstanding college math teacher.
  • In 2011, she received one of the highest teaching awards from the MAA, called the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. This award recognized her incredible work at the University of Michigan. She helped manage a huge calculus program for 4500 students each year and trained other teachers. Her work with the Harvard Calculus Consortium, which helped improve math education across the country, was also highlighted.

To honor her amazing teaching, the University of Michigan's math department created an award named after her. It's called the Karen Rhea Excellence in Teaching Award, and it's given to graduate students who show outstanding teaching skills.
