Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Karen Schwartzkopf-Genswein is a Canadian scientist who works for the government at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. She is an expert on the behavior, health, and welfare of farm animals, especially beef cattle. Her work helps make sure these animals are treated well.

Dr. Schwartzkopf-Genswein is known for her important research on how to care for cattle. She studies how long trips affect them and finds ways for farmers to reduce pain during common procedures. She also works on preventing and treating lameness, which is when cattle have trouble walking.

Her findings have helped create new rules and guidelines for the beef industry in North America. This means her work has improved the lives of millions of animals. Besides her research, she also teaches and advises people on the best ways to farm livestock.

From Farm Life to Scientist

Karen Schwartzkopf-Genswein grew up on a family farm in southern Alberta. The farm has been raising beef cattle for over 40 years. Living on the farm and being around animals from a young age made her curious about them. She wanted to understand how cattle behave and how to best care for them.

This interest led her to study science at university. She earned a degree in biology from the University of Lethbridge in 1986. She then got a master's degree in zoology, which is the study of animals. Finally, in 1996, she earned her PhD in applied animal ethology, the scientific study of animal behavior.

A Career Helping Animals

Before joining Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2003, Dr. Schwartzkopf-Genswein worked as a scientist for the government of Alberta. She is now seen as a top expert on beef cattle welfare. She is often invited to speak at meetings for scientists and farmers all over the world.

Her expertise is so valued that she has been on many expert committees. These groups work to improve how farm animals are treated. She has also written over 70 scientific articles that have been checked by other experts to make sure they are accurate.

In addition to her main job, Dr. Schwartzkopf-Genswein is also a part-time professor at several universities, including the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Calgary, and others in Canada and Brazil.
