Karl Theodor Bleek (born March 19, 1898, in Kirn – died December 15, 1969, in Marburg) was an important German politician. He was known for his liberal views and his work in government after World War II.
Early Life and Career
Karl Theodor Bleek was born in 1898 in a town called Kirn. He became interested in politics at a young age. In 1909, he joined the Progressive People's Party. Later, in 1918, he became a member of the German Democratic Party.
In 1932, Bleek became a "Landrat." This means he was the main leader of a local area, or district, called Landkreis Arnswalde. However, he was removed from this job in May 1933. This happened when the new Nazi government took power. After this, he continued to work for the state in other roles. He even worked as a treasurer in a city called Breslau.
After World War II
After World War II ended, Karl Theodor Bleek played a big role in rebuilding Germany. He helped start the Free Democratic Party (FDP). This party is known for its liberal ideas. Bleek was a key member of the party's left wing.
Mayor of Marburg
In 1946, Karl Theodor Bleek made history. He was the first person to be elected mayor of Marburg after World War II. He served as mayor until 1951. During his time as mayor, he helped the city recover from the war.
National Government Roles
Bleek also served in the state parliament of Hesse, called the Landtag of Hesse. He was a member there until 1951. After that, he moved to a role in the national government. He joined the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Germany). This is a very important government department.
From 1957 to 1961, Bleek led the Bundespräsidialamt. This office supports the Federal President. It's like being the chief of staff for the country's president. In 1963, he was chosen to be the president of the German National Academic Foundation. This foundation helps talented students with scholarships.
