Karrangpurru facts for kids
The Karrangpurru were an Indigenous Australian people from the Northern Territory. They faced big challenges when new settlers arrived and took over their land. This led to a large decrease in their population very early on.
Their Language
The language of the Karrangpurru people was called Karranga. Sadly, not much is known about it today. Many of the people who spoke Karranga passed away before their language could be written down or recorded. This means we don't have many examples of how they spoke.
Where the Karrangpurru Lived
The Karrangpurru people lived in an area north of the Bilinara people. This was their traditional country, where they lived for many generations.
A Challenging Time: Contact with Settlers
In 1883, the land where the Karrangpurru people lived became part of a large property called the Victoria River Downs Station. When new settlers came into their country, the Karrangpurru people faced very difficult times. Many people died due to conflicts and new diseases that the settlers brought with them. This caused a huge decline in their population.
However, some Karrangpurru people survived these challenges. Today, their descendants live in places like the community of Yarralin and the town of Katherine. They continue to carry on their culture and heritage.
