Katharine Helen Osborne, known as Kate Osborne, is a British politician. She is a member of the Labour Party. Since 2019, she has been a Member of Parliament (MP). She represents the area of Jarrow and Gateshead East. Before 2024, she represented Jarrow.

Kate Osborne's Political Journey
Osborne worked for Royal Mail for 25 years. She first got involved in politics in 2009. She ran in a local election for the Preston area in North Tyneside. She did not win that first election.
The next year, in 2010, Osborne was elected to represent Preston. This was for the North Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council. She won the seat from the person who held it before. She was re-elected for Preston in 2014 and again in 2018. She did not run in the 2022 local elections.
Becoming an MP
In 2019, she was elected to the House of Commons. This is where MPs work in the UK Parliament. She became the MP for Jarrow. Jarrow is known as a "safe seat" for the Labour Party. This means Labour usually wins elections there easily. She took over from the previous Labour MP, Stephen Hepburn. Osborne is part of a group within Labour called the Socialist Campaign Group. This group represents a left-wing view in politics.
Roles in Parliament
In January 2020, Osborne became a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). A PPS helps a senior politician. She worked with the Shadow Home Affairs team. This team looks at issues like policing and crime. The team was led by Diane Abbott. Osborne stopped being a PPS in April 2020. This was after Keir Starmer became the leader of the Labour Party.
She became a PPS again in December 2021. This time, she worked with the Shadow Northern Ireland team. This team was led by Peter Kyle. In 2021, she also joined the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. This program helps MPs learn about the military. She was assigned to the Royal Air Force.
Supporting Workers
In June 2022, there were railway strikes in the UK. Osborne joined the railway workers on their picket line. A picket line is where workers stand to protest. She showed her support for them. She said, "Solidarity to workers on strike today, they have my full support."
Kate Osborne's Life Outside Politics
Osborne is an active supporter of different causes. She is involved in trade unions. These groups help workers get fair pay and conditions. She also supports the LGBT+ movement. This movement works for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
She was married to Pamela Brooks. Pamela Brooks was also a local councillor in North Tyneside. They both served on the council at the same time. For four years, they both represented the Preston area. Osborne has two sons. She lives in her constituency, Jarrow.
On March 16, 2020, Osborne tested positive for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). She was the second British MP to get the virus. She stayed in self-isolation in her London flat for three weeks.
