Her family has connections to royalty! She is a second cousin to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. This is because her grandmother was Princess Patricia of Connaught. She is also a distant relative of the British royal family.
About Lady Saltoun
Her Early Life and Family
Katharine Ingrid Mary Isabel Ramsay was born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This happened on 11 October 1957. Her mother, Flora, 21st Lady Saltoun, held the title of suo jure Lady Saltoun. This means her mother inherited the title in her own right, not through marriage. Her mother was also the Chief of the Name and Arms of Clan Fraser, a very old Scottish clan.
Her father, Alexander Ramsay of Mar, was part of the Ramsay family. He was the son of the former Princess Patricia of Connaught. This makes him a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, a famous British monarch. Some of Katharine's godparents were important people too. They included Queen Ingrid of Denmark and the Princess Royal.
Katharine was born with her father's last name, Ramsay. In 1973, the Court of the Lord Lyon allowed her to use the surname Fraser. This court deals with Scottish heraldry and titles. Since she had no brothers, she was known as Mistress of Saltoun. This meant she was expected to inherit her mother's title. She became the 22nd Lady Saltoun and clan chief on 3 September 2024, after her mother passed away.
Her Important Roles
Lady Saltoun has taken on important roles in her community. On 20 April 2005, she was made a deputy lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. A deputy lieutenant helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who is the King's representative in a county.
More recently, on 13 June 2025, Lady Saltoun was appointed Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. This is a very important position, second only to the Lord-Lieutenant.
Her Family Life
In February 1980, it was announced that Katharine would marry Captain Mark Malise Nicolson. He was born on 29 September 1954 and served in the Irish Guards, a famous army regiment. His parents are Malise Nicolson and Vivian Riley.
Queen Elizabeth II gave her permission for the marriage on 13 February 1980. This was required under an old law called the Royal Marriages Act 1772. Katharine and Mark were married on 3 May 1980. They have three children together. One of their children is the Hon. Alexander Fraser, Master of Saltoun. He was born in 1990 and is expected to inherit his mother's title. He also served as a Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth II for a time.
