Katherine Frances Purdon (1852– 23 June 1920) was an Irish writer. She wrote novels and plays. Katherine was part of a special time in Ireland called the Irish Revival. She was also a member of the Irish Countrywomen's Association, which was first known as the United Irishwomen.

Who Was Katherine Purdon?

Katherine Purdon was born in 1852 in a place called Hotwell, Enfield, in County Meath, Ireland. Her family worked in farming. She went to school in England and later studied at Alexandra College in Dublin.

Her Writing Career

Katherine Purdon wrote many stories and articles. These were published in magazines and newspapers in both Ireland and England. Her first published work appeared in a magazine called Irish Homestead.

She also wrote plays that were performed at the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin. This was a big achievement, as she was one of only eleven women to have a play shown there during that time. Some of her books even had drawings by famous artists like Jack B. Yeats. Another well-known writer, George Russell, said that Katherine wrote "perfect English." Her work was noticed far and wide, with reviews appearing in places from London to New York.

Her Connection to Irish Culture

Katherine was very interested in the Irish Language movement. This movement aimed to bring back and celebrate the Irish language. Even though she admitted she only knew a few words of Irish herself, she supported the movement.

She was an important part of the Irish Revival. This was a period when Irish artists and writers wanted to celebrate Irish culture, history, and traditions. Katherine did this by writing about the people, language, and customs of her home county, Meath.

Katherine Purdon was also one of the first people to help start the Irish Countrywomen's Association. This group helps women in rural Ireland. It was originally called the United Irishwomen.
