Her Early Life and Education
Kathleen Redding was born on July 11, 1890. Her parents were Wesley Chapel Redding and Ellen. She was the oldest of four children. Her family was a well-known Black family in Atlanta. As a child, she lived on Auburn Avenue, a lively Black neighborhood. She went to public school there.
In 1906, Kathleen went to Atlanta University. She studied with famous teachers like W.E.B. DuBois and George A. Towns. She finished her studies and graduated from Atlanta University in 1911.
A Dedicated Teacher
After graduating, Kathleen Redding taught at the Roach Street School in Atlanta. She taught there for twelve years. Later, she married William D. Adams. He worked for the railway. They divorced in 1935.
Kathleen then returned to teaching. She taught in the Fulton County School District for 17 more years. During this time, she also taught at the Carrie Steele Pitts Home. This home cared for children who didn't have parents. She loved helping these children learn. Kathleen Adams retired from teaching in 1957.
Preserving History and Hobbies
Kathleen Adams cared a lot about history. She kept many family documents and special items. Sometimes, she would lend these items to the City of Atlanta for people to see. She also made recordings about the history of public schools in Atlanta.
As a hobby, Adams enjoyed writing short poems or "verses." These verses described people and events. Some of her writings were even published in the Atlanta Daily World newspaper.
In 1977, she was the oldest active member of the First Congregational Church in Atlanta. She also served as the church's historian. She helped keep track of the church's past when Henry H. Proctor was the minister.
Her Later Years
Kathleen Redding Adams lived a very long life. She passed away on June 15, 1993. She was 102 years old.
