Kathleen Ryan (born September 8, 1922 – died December 11, 1985) was a famous Irish actress. She was born in Dublin, Ireland. Kathleen starred in many British and Hollywood movies from 1947 to 1957. In 2020, she was even named one of Ireland's greatest film actors by The Irish Times newspaper.

Kathleen Ryan's Family Life
Kathleen's father passed away in 1933. He had just been chosen to be part of Ireland's senate, which is like a government council.
She had several brothers and sisters. Her brother, John Ryan, was an artist and writer in Dublin. He was known for helping many writers who were just starting out. He even created a short-lived magazine called Envoy.
Her other siblings included a priest, a nun, and sisters who married an artist and a politician. Kathleen went to school in convents and universities. In 1944, she married Dermod Devane. They had three children together. Their marriage ended in 1958.
Kathleen Ryan's Acting Career
Kathleen Ryan began her acting journey on stage. She performed with the Dublin Abbey Players and at Longford's Gate Theater. A film director named Carol Reed discovered her talent.
Her very first movie role was a main part in Odd Man Out (1947). She was under contract with a film producer named Arthur Rank. He didn't let her act in other movies for a while. But once her contract ended, she started making films again.
Some of her other movies include Captain Boycott (1947) and The Sound of Fury (1950). She also appeared in an English movie called Christopher Columbus (1949). However, parts of her role were removed from the version shown in the United States. This was because her character had a romantic story with Christopher Columbus, which was not approved in America at the time.
A Famous Painting of Kathleen
Kathleen Ryan was the subject of a very special painting. It was created by the famous artist Louis le Brocquy. The painting is called Girl in White and was made in 1941. It was shown at the RHA exhibition that same year. This oil painting is now part of the Ulster Museum collection.
Later Life and Passing
Kathleen Ryan passed away in Dublin in December 1985. She was 63 years old and died from a lung illness. She was buried with her parents in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. Her grave is near a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Republican Plot.
