Early Life and Education
Kathryn Bowers grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. She finished high school at Hamilton High School in 1960. Later, she continued her education at Griggs Business College, earning a degree in 1962. She also studied journalism at Memphis State University from 1970 to 1972.
Before Politics
Before becoming a politician, Kathryn Bowers was active in her community. She was the President of Women Action for New Direction (WAND) from 1999 to 2003. She also worked as a business consultant and helped lead an organization called Women in Government. From 2003 to 2005, she was the Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee for Shelby County.
Serving in the Tennessee House of Representatives
Kathryn Bowers began her political career in 1995. She was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives, where she represented her community. She served in the House for several terms, from 1995 to 2005.
House Majority Whip Role
During her time in the House, she took on a leadership position. She was the House Majority Whip for the 103rd General Assembly. A "Whip" helps make sure that members of their political party vote together on important issues.
Moving to the Tennessee Senate
