Kathryn Jones Harrison (March 28, 1924 – May 21, 2023) was an important leader of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. She worked hard to help her tribe regain their official status and build a strong future.

Early Life and Education

Kathryn May Jones was born in Corvallis, Oregon, on March 28, 1924. When she was ten years old, her parents passed away due to a serious illness. After this, she lived in foster care for a time.

She later attended the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon. This was a boarding school for Native American children. In the 1970s, Kathryn decided to continue her education. She enrolled in the School of Nursing at Lane Community College.

Working for Her Community

After graduating from Lane Community College, Kathryn worked as a nurse at Lincoln City Hospital. She lived close to the Siletz Reservation. Her leadership skills were quickly recognized, and she was elected to be the secretary of the Tribal Council there.

In 1976, Kathryn spoke to the United States Congress. She strongly supported the idea of federal tribal recognition. This meant getting the government to officially recognize Native American tribes. She then returned to Grand Ronde to fight for her tribe's official status. Thanks to her efforts, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon were officially recognized in 1983.

Kathryn Harrison is also known for helping to pass the Reservation Restoration Act of 1988. This law helped restore lands to Native American tribes. She also played a big part in creating the Spirit Mountain Casino. This casino has helped the Grand Ronde Tribe become more financially stable.

Personal Life and Special Honors

Kathryn Jones married Frank Harrison, who she met at Chemawa Indian School. They had ten children together.

Kathryn received many honors for her important work. Portland State University gave her an honorary doctorate degree. Lane Community College named her their Alumna of the Year. The Oregon Historical Society also recognized her as an "Oregon History Maker."

In 2021, an elementary school in Corvallis, Oregon, was renamed Kathryn Harrison Elementary in her honor. A special ceremony took place at the school on May 5, 2022, and Kathryn was able to attend.

Kathryn Jones Harrison passed away on May 21, 2023, at the age of 99. She left behind a powerful legacy of leadership and dedication to her community.
