A Career in Dance

When Kathy was about forty years old, she decided to join the National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA). This is a special school that teaches dance and performing arts to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Her training at NAISDA led her to work with the Bangarra Dance Theatre. This is a world-famous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts company. Kathy first performed with Bangarra in 2003. A newspaper critic named Martin Buzacott wrote that she was "crucial" to one of their shows called Bush. He said she brought "natural authority and an intense dignity" to the performance.

Kathy continued to work with Bangarra, traveling all over the world with their shows. She performed in big cities like London, New York, and Saigon, sharing her culture through dance.

In 2011, Kathy helped create a play called Bloodland for the Sydney Theatre Company. She worked with other talented people like Wayne Blair and Stephen Page on this project. In the same year, she won a special award called the Deadly Award for Best Dancer. The Deadly Awards celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

As an artist-in-residence for Bangarra Dance Theatre, Kathy had an important role. She took the dancers to her home community. There, she taught them about Aboriginal cultural practices and traditions. She also took part in the company's educational programs and workshops, helping to teach and inspire many young dancers.
