Katsuo Kanda (神田 勝夫, Kanda Katsuo, born 21 June 1966) is a former Japanese football (soccer) player. He was born on June 21, 1966. Kanda played as a defender or a midfielder. He also played for the Japan national team.
Katsuo Kanda played in 162 matches in Japan's top football league. He played for several teams during his career. These teams included NKK, Cerezo Osaka, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Albirex Niigata.
Club Career: Playing for Different Teams
Katsuo Kanda started his football journey in high school. He went to Niigata Technical High School. His team even played in the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament. After high school, he continued to play football while studying at Tokyo University of Agriculture.
In 1989, after finishing university, Kanda began his professional career. He joined a team called NKK in the Japan Soccer League. At NKK, he mostly played as a forward, which is a player who tries to score goals. In 1993, he was the top scorer for his club, scoring 8 goals.
In 1994, Kanda moved to Cerezo Osaka. This team was in the Japan Football League at the time. In his first year, he scored 5 goals in 30 games. He helped Cerezo Osaka get promoted to the J1 League, which is Japan's highest football division. Kanda stayed with Cerezo Osaka for four more years. He played as a left back and appeared in almost 150 matches for the club.
Later, in 2000, Kanda joined his hometown club, Albirex Niigata. He played for this team for four seasons. His last professional match was on October 19, 2003. Before he officially retired, a special "testimonial" match was held for him. This match took place on July 27, 2003, at Niigata Stadium. Albirex Niigata played against the famous team Boca Juniors and won 2-1. Right after retiring, Katsuo Kanda became the technical director for Albirex Niigata. A technical director helps manage the football side of the club, like player development and coaching.
National Team Career: Playing for Japan
In 1995, Katsuo Kanda was chosen to play for the Japan national team. This is a big honor for any player. He was called up by the coach, Shu Kamo. Kanda played in one friendly match against Ecuador on May 28, 1995. This was his only game for the national team.
